Preventing Suicide - In a Personal Way

In Australia, near the Sydney harbour, there is an infamous place known as 'The Gap'. Every year, on this rocky cliff with a spectacular view, where many come to take photos, countless others contemplate taking their lives. Donald Ritchie and his wife have been living across the street and overlooking this spot for almost 50 years.

Upon observing a person who appears to be considering suicide, he walks to them with an invitation to his apartment for a talk and a cup of tea. Most accept, and it seems that someone to talk with is often what's needed for these struggling souls to hang on. Donald has also installed a fence to discourage people from going over the edge.

Over the years, Donald has stopped more than 160 people from jumping to their deaths, even after a few times when his decision to help placed his own life at risk. He feels it is his responsibility to save the lives that he can.

Listen to an interview with Donald Ritchie on Radio Netherlands Worldwide.
